When a group of people are trying to accomplish something, having a good leader is essential.

A good leader commands a group with respect, confidence and a sense of duty. There are 2 stories that share 2 different ways on how a leader should act. The first is “The Thanksgiving Proclamation.

” The other is “The Lady or the Tiger?” Out of these, I think that the former does a better job of showcasing what a good leader is and how he operates because the leader, George Washington, demonstrates all of the qualities of an exceptional leader. The king in, “The Lady or the Tiger?” is described as “semi-barbaric.” Surely, this can’t be a good trait in a leader. “The Thanksgiving Proclamation” does a better job because it shows what a great leader does and his qualities.

“The Lady or the Tiger?” doesn’t show much about leadership and the little it does show merely portrays what not to do as a leader. George Washington demonstrates respect, confidence, and a sense of duty. His respectfulness is shown when he acknowledges God for the providence he has given them in paragraph 2. The King in “The Lady or the Tiger?” Is not respectful. This is shown is paragraph 9.

“This royal maiden was well satisfied with her lover, for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this kingdom, and she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong. This love affair moved on happily for many months, until, one day, the king happened to discover its existence. He did not hesitate nor waver in regard to his duty in the premises. The youth was immediately cast into prison, and a day was appointed for his trial in the king’s arena.

” The princess liked the relationship with her lover but the King, her own father couldn’t respect her wanting to be with him and threw him in jail. Both Washington and the King have confidence. The King is clearly confident in his abilities as a leader based on the actions he makes and Washington’s confidence is shown over the span of the proclamation as he declares the good that God has done and calls for a new holiday. However, only Washington has a sense of duty. In paragraph 4, Washington states, “…

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws…” Washington uses this line to unite the people and create a holiday giving thanks to God. The King however decides that instead of looking at important issues in the kingdom and trying to solve them, he’d rather create an entire trial over someone having a relationship with his daughter. This brings me to my next point. A story can not show what a good leader is if the leader of that story is semi-barbaric. Barbaric describes something that is, “savagely cruel, primitive, exceedingly brutal and unsophisticated.” Even though the king is only half of this, it’s still enough to cloud logical judgement. This can’t make for quality leadership.

Lastly, “Thanksgiving Proclamation” does a better job of portraying leadership because it shows what to do as a leader. If someone’s aspiration is to be a great leader one day, they’d read “Thanksgiving Proclamation.” It shows what great leaders do and shows their qualities. “The Lady or the Tiger?” shows what not  to do as a leader. If people want to learn what not to do then this selection is perfect. However, just because people know what not to do as a leader, doesn’t mean they know what to do. Yes, the same argument could be said vice versa but generally, when people know what to do, they tend to stick to it.

In conclusion, both “Thanksgiving Proclamation” and “The Lady or the Tiger?” have different ways of portraying leadership but “Thanksgiving Proclamation” does a better job. The leader isn’t semi-barbaric, he has good leadership qualities and a sense of duty.
