Victoria ChanthavongJanuary 22, 2018American GovernmentResponse Paper #1    Today’s Democrats are yesterday’s Republicans, The Democratic party believes that they have an important role to play in society. It fights against economic inequality, it also advocates policies that battle racial and gender discrimination. Their beliefs today are surrounded by helping the nation for the greater good, “Democrats believe that we’re greater together than we are on our own—that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules.

Our party is focused on building an economy that lifts up all Americans, not just those at the top”.  Today’s Republican Party says they oppose big government, but they are the “big government”, its demographic supporters is strongest among the white voters, and it’s culturally conservative. Republicans once stood where Democrats are today centuries ago, but government spending during the civil war began to change the young Republicans Party, by making northern businessmen really rich and taking more and more of a leadership role in the party. The Republicans core belief is surrounded by the fact that each person is responsible for their place in society. They believe one should prosper while limiting the interventions from the government.     The Democrats and Republicans remain to be the two largest historical parties, with opposite philosophical views, opposing on many issues such as taxes, abortions, gun- laws, same-sex marriage etc.

The Democratic Party, being liberal works toward progressiveness and fights for equality for the people. Whereas, Republicans are more conservative, holding onto their traditional values, also believing in “survival of the fittest”.  The two parties having many opposing views. The Democrats believe in order to allow the government to boost spending for social programs in the lower-class, they need to tax the upper-class more and tax the middle and lower-class less. The Republicans, however, have a different outlook on this, they believe that both rich and poor should share the same amount of taxes, yet oppose raising minimum wages because they feel that it can hurt the entrepreneurs and small businesses. Another belief that both Democrats and Republicans are clashing heads on is abortion, some states it’s legal and then some are illegal. The Democratic Party, believe that women should have their own rights since it is their body, nobody else should have a say in it, not the government or anyone of a higher power.  The Republican Party leans towards traditional family values, which even restricts the idea of abortions.

They believe in the old values and that even an unborn child should have the right to live, like any other human on this planet. In my opinion, life should be universal, but the two parties aren’t very logical. The Democrats want to preserve endangered species lives, but not human lives? The Republicans want to protect the unborn lives, but not those overseas? With immigration also being on the list of opposing ideas between the two parties,  Democrats and business elites tend to support reforming immigration laws so that the ten million unauthorized immigrants would get legal status. On the Republicans side “tough on immigration” policies and rhetoric became popular. Republicans wanted stronger border control and tighter regulation.

Trump the new elected President even said in his announcement speech  “I will build a great, great wall on our Southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall.” This showing where Republicans stance is on immigration, and also by The Muslim ban he had proposed.     It may seem like it may be difficult to find any common ground between the two parties, but rest assured that both parties want to make the United States look strong in their worldly affairs. The Democrats and Republicans may clash on a lot of situations, but when it comes to peace and unity amongst our country, they will “try” in their own ways to bring that. There may not be much common ground on domestic issues, but there is a lot of common ground when it comes to foreign policy and national security. Both Parties want to have good relations amongst other countries, but both may achieve their goal in their own way. Democrats and Republicans both want to see our economy grow and become stronger. When it comes to money both will spend billions of dollars giving it to big corporations, and also spend the same amount yearly during election season.

Even though there are just a few situations where Democrats and Republicans have common ground, the two political parties will never truly meet in the middle.     While Democrats and Republicans are viewed as these strong Party’s “trying” to help our nation, they have their strengths and weaknesses. The millennial generation is the biggest strength of the Democratic Party, do to the fact that a majority of them are liberals. However, this is also their weakness, because even though the millennials fall under the democratic party, they are known to not vote. Mainly because some may view “engaging in politics is a personal choice, not a civic obligation”. Millennials also believe that the Democratic Party is better at handling racial discrimination, the environment, and healthcare.  The Republicans downfall or weakness is that they push their practice to hard, that they believe things should be run one way, and it’s theirs.

When instead they could easily meet in the middle and figure out what’s best. The Republicans strength is that they do a better job at federal debt, national defense, and terrorism.     Growing up with the millennial generation shows a lot of us could care less about both parties. Mainly because no matter what we have to say nothing really falls through. We feel we are just one person, and it won’t matter. However, there are pros to both sides, but its like we grow up and you have to choose whose side you’re on. We are supposed to be one country not choosing sides, this is why the Democrats and Republicans should unite as one.
