“The percentage of computing jobs held by women has actually fallen over the past 23 years, according to a new study,” says Emily Peck. (according to Emily Peck, women in computing jobs have fallen over the years) a source (on March 27,2015 a huffpost.com headline read “The statistics on Women are actually getting worse”) Women are not recognized in the technology world as much as they should be. The technology world in which women are not known in is; science, engineering and technology industry. There is a theory that has carried on as of today that men are known as the “harder workers”  and are able to accomplish the more “on-hand jobs”. Though other women may think otherwise overall, many women may agree with this theory because they do not like to get their hands dirty. It is hard to believe that even in the technology industry it is difficult to earn a job in the computer science world because they also discriminate women.

Gender discrimination is a situation in which someone is treated less because of their sex. In this case this is well known in the woman industry. This is considered sexism, meaning discrimination based on your sex. This typically happens to women. Discrimination is someone treated unfairly due to a certain group or class.

Women not being recognized for their capability is foul and should not represent them. According to the Center for Talent Innovation “In the tech industry, the quit rate is more than twice as high for women as it is as men.” Women are not recognized in the technology world because many believe they are distractions or can not follow through in a task. Having the title as a woman can be very intimidating because many believe we do not have the capability as men do.

The jobs in which women are underestimated are computer science like jobs and big companies such as; Google, Mac and Microsoft. A software engineer known as, James Damore states to his partners at Google,”I’m simply stating,” Damore wrote, “that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership.” His belief towards women states that women have a stronger interest in people and he uses the word “neuroticism” to describe women. Neuroticism is one of the big five higher-order personality traits in the study of psychology. Many who are diagnosed with neuroticism or have symptoms of this are likely to be moody and to have side effects such as anxiety, worry, fear, anger, frustration, envy, jealousy, guilt, depressed mood, and loneliness. Damore had a strong belief of these character traits coming with a woman. Which is why he stuck to his  belief that women are not entitled to code. He believed his theory was backed up by many reasons why women did not deserve to be in the industry of coding.

 On the other hand, a women named Hall stated “They are so passionate about coding, Lots of women love coding. There just aren’t these gender differences there”. Women interest many things a man can interest there is no difference in this case just because they have a title of being a women. Many do not understand that women have different preferences also and they do not have to stick within a certain industry based on their sex. Women seem to be titled as “less rational” than men. Gender socialization starts at an early age, boys and girls are usually lead into a certain career path. Young boys are usually encouraged to interest in robots, spaceships, aliens and cars. As for young girls they enjoy doctor toys, barbies or princesses.

This is a normal state of mind for young boys and girls to interest within their categories. If any young girl were to interest otherwise such as, cars, trucks, spaceships or skateboards they automatically would refer the young girl as a “tom boy”. This is an example that society is based on gender socialization and young kids are taught at a young age what they should and should not interest. According to Careerfoundry they state “Most women think technology is more like a boys’ club and they will not fit in.

There is also the stereotype that people in technology are geeky and socially awkward”. There is judgement that the technology world is boring and believe that women will not fit in because you have to be a “computer geek” to enjoy the technology world. Another big role in which many women are not hired in the tech world is because of discrimination. For example a mother having to leave for maternity leave, or because employers do not want to hire a women who might someday leave to assume a carer’s role at home.

Mothers may experience disadvantages in general for being off of work for a certain period of time. Though in the tech world this is a serious matter because in order to fulfil the requirements you are expected to be a dedicated worker and dedicate  your time and energy to make their company successful. According to The University Of Chicago Press Journals it states that “mothers will be rated as less competent, less committed to paid work, less suitable for hire and promotion, and deserving of lower starting salaries compared with otherwise equal women who are not mothers.” Within the years women in the tech world has dramatically changed. According to Ada Lovelace Day (ALD), this is an international celebration day of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This celebration recognizes all the women who have achieved a career in the STEM field. In doing so, they want to be able to encourage more women into STEM careers and the women who are currently working.

 This celebration was founded in 2009 by Suw Charman- Anderson, every year it is held on the second tuesday of October. By postponing this celebration it recognizes the women who were able to follow through in the technology industry and create a day in which women are recognized for their success. This is a big accomplishment for many women because they are underestimated by just having the title as a women and deserved to be shown to many women around the world who do not have support in entering this certain career. Many people will ask why are you trying to fit in a mans world? Many women get discouraged for having different interests in where many believe they do not fit in. Men have outnumbered women in the technology industry. Women can feel very intimidated when it comes to the tech world knowing that it is unusual to see a women engineer or a women coding. Although gender discrimination is illegal it happens on an everyday basis. Sexism and discrimination is something that will go on forever which is why women get the feeling of inferiority when in a man-like job.

This is a big issue therefore there has been a change to this situation. They are now inspiring young girls in engineering and science in various of books. For example, “Rosie Revere, Engineer”. Many women in the world have took on this challenge to be the difference and encourage more women to study in the technology industry
