And the author also adopt of thedefining of the strategy which is also known as a Trident combining of thethree prongs which are mentioned above. 2) Whatis the author’s conceptual framework? Does the author use any theory from thefield and / or their own framework to answer the question? How is the paperorganized? In this article, the author usesPivot, US Foreign Policy, US Grand Strategy, Perceptions, Economic Policy,Fragile Unity, Multilateral diplomacy, Bilateral Diplomacy, Security Realm,Nationalism, etc. The paper is well organized by six chapters as follows:· Introduction· Recalibrating the Rebalance· Divisive Dynamics · US’s attitude towards each MaritimeStates· The Southeast Asian countries’perspectives towards US· Conclusion. 3) Whatkind of research methods/data collection does the author use? Is the author researchenough? The author uses QualitativeResearch method by using Primary and Secondary resources. Data were collectedfrom articles, journals, research books and etc. If the author will describe USRebalance policy in Myanmar which is really a well known example, this articlewill become more perfect. 4) Summaryof the articleThe Rebalance to Asia was launchedby US President Obama in his first term.Initially, this policy focus on military diplomatic elements of US in SoutheastAsia and the focus on economic prong is less developed.
Within this policy, ASEAN countries are the mainvehicles for Washington’s multilateral diplomacy in the Southeast Asia.Exactly, the Philippines and the Vietnam are the important parts of the USrebalance as the new US bases which will need and secure for the South ChinaSea. Also, the Singapore’s Paya Lebar Air Base is served as an important hubfor the US military transport aircraft transiting through Southeast Asia, etc. However, the US rebalance Trident haven’t reached yet and limitations andconstraints to rebalance is widening. Therefore, new bargaining between US andASEAN members are still needed to narrow the gap. 5) CommentsAlthough the research questions ofthe author are relevant, the author didn’t give any significant answers to hisquestions.
Moreover, the author didn’t mention the rest of Southeast Asiacountries. He only highlighted the maritime and continental states’ conditions. Moreover, he used many references, exactly 93 sources. In my opinion, that maycause his own opinion disappear and there are more chance to influence his ownideas by others.
Except those, his definition of the Trident which combine thethree prongs of Multilateral/Bilateral diplomacy, trade and investmentpromotion and military presence, could well explain US rebalance in SoutheastAsia.
