Quality Improvement MeasureLilia FernandezCapstone /NUR445January 10, 2018Quality Improvement MeasureContinuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program is intended to provide evidenced -based care that is consistent with generally policies and procedures. It is the intention of Correctional Care System (CCS) recognizes practices in both correctional and non-correctional communities when possible within the constraints established by clients. CQI program recognizes that this policy requires continuing self-evaluation carried out in a structured fashion with identification of opportunities for improvement resulting in implementation of changes followed by additional self-evaluation. CQI is a continuous process (Wang, etal, 2017). CQI is important because it covers, process, and outcome aspects of health service delivery such as:? Structure: refers to the underlying activities and physical plant established to provide an environment in which quality health care can be provided.? Process: refers to the activities performed as health care is delivered.? Outcome: refers to the results of the healthcare that has been delivered. The CQI will assist in improving healthcare by risk management, infection control, peer review, and medication error reduction program. Risk management focuses on staff injuries that are subject to reporting to the Occupational Safety and health Administration. Infection control maintains an infection control program to prevent, identify and control serious communicable diseases. Infection control reports should reviewed during the CQI monthly meetings. Peer review or clinical performance enhancement is a quality improvement activity focused on improving the care provided to patients by examining the practice of the provider. The CQI committee is responsible for tracking, scheduling and ensuring for each professional requiring review that the review occurs. Medication error reduction program is a health service programs that focuses on proper selection, acquisition and delivery of pharmaceutical products. Incorrect dosage, timing or medication can result in a failure to provide proper treatment or in immediate harm to patient. Although pharmaceutical procedures include many checks to ensure that the proper medication reaches the patient in the proper way, in the end there are many steps that depend upon humans. Every time that a medication error is identified, it is reviewed and consideration is given to preventing recurrences. Another way to improve CQI is through routine monitoring. Routine monitoring is also known as “quality monitoring” and is used to identify the types of formal review activities typically associated with quality assurance programs such as; identifying an area for examination, defining how the examination will be accomplished, determining what constitutes acceptable performance, comparing findings against the predetermined satisfactory level, designing and implementing performance improvement measures when necessary and re-examining the area to determine if the desired improvement has been accomplished.Nurses at all levels of an organization can have an enormous impact on the improvement of quality and safe patient care. As a nurse, we must understand our role in contributing to improvements and the resources available to assist us with identifying best practices, leading initiatives to make improvements, and developing and carrying out a plan for improvement.
