On November 8th
2017, in the press conference at the WMT, the authorities of tourism board of
Balearic Islands has announced the details about their strategies for tourism
in Balearic Islands in 2017 and the key points that they will focus most in
2018.

As the number of
tourists to the Balearic Islands increases, it also raise a lot of social and
environmental issues on the islands. Therefore, since 2016, they introduced the
tax for sustainable tourism on order to have capital to make investments to
compensate all those issues on the 4 islands in the Balearic Islands: Mallorca,
Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Besides the purpose of
protecting and recovering the environment on Balearic Islands. The tourism tax
has some other purposes. It helps the Balearic Islands to have the money to
invest on promoting for sustainable and low-season tourism. Therefore, they can
attracts more people also in low-season and have more chance to create more
jobs for the locals. Moreover, the tax can be used for recovering and repairing
historical and cultural heritage in order to make them accessible to the
tourists. It can also be inveted in encouraging and financing for projects that
contribute to improve environmental issues and maintain the environment of the
Balearic Islands itself.

This sustainable
tourism tax is applied on all overnight stays in tourist accommodations on the
Balearic Islands. The tax rates depend on the type of accommodation:

In high season, which
is from May 1st to 31th October, the rate per day for:

–      
5-star,
5-star luxury and 4-star superior hotels / 4-keys superior and 4-keys tourist
apartments is 4€

–      
4-star and
3-star superior hotels / 3-keys superior tourist apartment is 3€

–      
1-star/-key,
2-star/-key and 3-star/-key hotels and tourist apartments is 2€

–      
Holiday
rentals (fincas, apartments, houses) and other tourist establishments is 2€

–      
Rural
hotels, agrotourism accommodation and inland tourism accommodation is 2€

–      
Hostels,
lodgings, guest houses, boarding houses, tourist camps or campsites, shelters
and refuges is 1€

–      
Tourist
cruise liner is 2€

In low season, which
is from November 1st to April 30th, the rate per day for:

–      
5-star,
5-star luxury and 4-star superior hotels / 4-keys superior and 4-keys tourist
apartments is 1€

–      
4-star and
3-star superior hotels / 3-keys superior tourist apartment is 0.75€

–      
1-star/-key,
2-star/-key and 3-star/-key hotels and tourist apartments is 0.5€

–      
Holiday
rentals (fincas, apartments, houses) and other tourist establishments is 0.5€

–      
Rural
hotels, agrotourism accommodation and inland tourism accommodation is 0.5€

–      
Hostels,
lodgings, guest houses, boarding houses, tourist camps or campsites, shelters
and refuges is 0.25€

–      
Tourist
cruise liner is 0.5€

There are also some
exception for the tax:

–      
Children
under 16 years old don’t have to pay the tax.

–      
The long
stay tourists will have 50% discount on the tax from the 9th day of
their stay at the same accommodation.

–      
Cruise
passengers who travel on a ship that has the base port in Balearic Islands will
not have to pay the tax.

. In 2017, the total
amount of sustainable tourism tax is 64 million €. Part of this
revenue will be invested to projects that helps to improve the natural
environment and historical and cultural heritage as well as water cycle. All
the projects are guaranteed to bring the positive impacts for both the locals
and tourists.

Here are some main projects
that are selected to receive the investment:

Acquisition
of the 6 properties that face the cloister of San Diego is the project of
Consell de Menorca for Alaior (Menorca). It has been granted 841,266.00 €.

Description:

This project consists in acquiring the 6 buildings that face the cloister of San
Diego with the objective of proceeding to demolish and to adapt the original
facade, continuing with the line that originally formed the cloister and the
church.

Purpose:

Recovery and restoration of the historical and
cultural heritage.

Submarine
atlas cartography Posidonia oceanic of the Balearic Islands is the project of
government for all 4 islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and
Formentera. It has been granted 387,410.92 €.

Description:

 This project intends to
complete the cartography existing on the basis of oceanic Posidonia, to verify
the validity and the degree of fidelity / integrity of this, to create a
computer application that allows the user to know if it is in zone of allowed
anchoring or not, as well as disseminate the project and its application.

Purpose:

Protect, preserve, modernise and restore the
natural, rural, agricultural and marine environment.

Drive to decrease seasonality, to create and
activate tourist products suitable for the off-peak season and to promote
sustainable and off-peak season tourism.

Strengthening
of the western wall of the Medieval Islamic castle of Santa Àgueda is the project of Consell Insular Menorca for Ferreries (Menorca). It has been granted 118.089,59
€.

Description:

The project involves consolidating and
renovating part of the wall located to the north of the central nucleus of the
Medieval Islamic castle of Santa Àgueda to stop materials from coming loose or
threatening to fall.

Purpose:

Recovery and restoration of the historical and
cultural heritage.

Project to restore the water
infrastructure for human consumption in the Cabrera National Park is the project of Government for Palma (Mallorca). It has been granted 70.000

Description:

This project derives from the need to renovate
using carbon fibre or similar materials the floor of the main water supply
reservoir of the Cabrera archipelago as it currently shows clear signs of
deterioration. This will ensure the replacement of the steel lost to corrosion.

Purpose:

Protect, preserve, modernise and restore the
natural, rural, agricultural and marine environment.

Seabirds.
Recovery of the Balearic shearwater and other Balearic marine bird is the project of Government for Balearic Islands. It has been granted 303.000

Description:

The plan for the recovery and conservation of
sea birds of the Balearic Islands is being implemented with the aim of carrying
out a biological restoration of colonies (eliminating invasive species from
colonies), reducing mortality due to people, preventing risks from human
activities and ensuring the monitoring of the colonies.

headquarters for the Balearic Islands Symphonic Orchestra is the project of Government for Palma (Mallorca). It has been granted 400.000,00 €

Description:

This project tackles the need to provide a new
home for the Balearic Islands’ symphony orchestra, as its current home has
insufficient basic infrastructure, affecting on rehearsals and the musicians’
technical preparation.

and restoration action plan of the Camí de Cavalls  is the project of CI
Menorca for Menorca. It has been granted 260.695,99 €

Description:

This project involves carrying out a study and
identifying erosion points on the Camí de Cavalls on the island of Minorca. The
study includes a proposal for implementing management measures aimed at
alleviating the erosion processes detected along the stretch analysed.
