Nowadays, business is growing in a number, both large and small, are becoming aware of the need of the proper BCP and DRP to run the business during any sorts of emergencies and any kind of fatal calamities. They must be able to provide the proper service to the costumers, clients whatever the situation it is.
So, BCP and DRP is must needed for the successful business and organization.BCP is a type of planning that prepares an organization to reestablish or relocate critical business operations during a disaster that affects operations at the primary site. DRP is the process of preparing an organization to handle a disaster and recover from it, whether the disaster is natural or man-made (Whitman & Mattord, 2014).
Disaster can happen accidentally at any time and at any period. No one can know when it’s coming. So as Prevention is Better than cure the organization must be prepared from the beginning about the damage that can happen suddenly and to recover from it as quickly as possible. Business Continuity focuses on maintaining the operations of an organization, especially the IT infrastructure in face of a threat that has materialized. Disaster recovery, on the other hand, arises mostly when business continuity plan fails to maintain operations and there is a service disruption. (Vision) 7.
Aims and Objective No work is done without aims and objective. The main aim of doing this technical report is to do the coursework on the topic that I have chosen i.e.
Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Planning. The aims are literally met by basically creating objectives withstanding on the aims mentioned above. The main objective of doing this project is to show the importance of having the proper BCP and DRP for an organization in the fast-growing world of technologies, the several challenges and problem when BCP and DRP are not planned, and the important of having such plans in the organization. The next objective is to do the case study on, how these certain plans have helped the organization to reach the goal and what was affected on the organization when these plans were not properly used. To meet the following objectives, I did the several pieces of research on the internet, books were also so much helpful. 8.Business Continuity Planning(BCP) Business Continuity Planning is a procedure or an applied plan for how the business could be recover or be practically restore critical business activities within a certain period of crisis and disaster.
It is also one of the most critical components of the recovery strategy. But unfortunately, every company does not have the continuity plan. Having the proper BCP indicates that the how well a company prepares itself to face against the unexpected disasters, disruptions, and charges, enabling that the business process will continue to function in the time of most adverse circumstances with the suitable limitations. There is a lot of threats organization is facing nowadays, but it is surprising that majority of the companies are not prepared for the business-affecting emergencies. Some researches indicate that the 75 percent of the business fail within the three years after a major disaster occurs as they don’t take the plan seriously and think the insurance will cover all their losses. Also, some researchers suggest that the having BCP recovers faster and more effectively following the emergencies.
Objectives of Business Continuity PlanningBusiness Continuity Planning mainly focuses to minimize the loses by enabling the organization to survive through a disaster and bringing back the business into the normal conditions. 9.Disaster Recovery Planning Disaster Recovery Planning is the that type of planning, that arises when Business Continuity Planning fails and there is a service affected in the organization.
10.Case Study 10.1.2011 JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI The case study is about the 2011 massive Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. It is taken from the journal which was published in Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineering, volume 1, 21st of December of 2013 by the Hiroaki Maruya. The case study here shows the problems face by many companies and organization after the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami without BCP and DRP, and the improvement in the implementation of the BCP and DRP.
After the earthquake and Tsunami Japan faced various types of Problem. Due to the continuous ground motion, tsunami and ground liquefaction, there was the shortages of electricity and fuel. The resultant supply of halt of parts, materials and services by the damages of the companies disrupted the supply chain which spread the disruption to the business throughout the Japan and also at the international level.
After that it became the fear factor to the foreign country to properly believe in the production and supply system of Japan as there are large productions companies in the Japan. Figure 1- Showing Different Ratio of BCPThe above chart is the survey done by different organizations in Japan in the large-scale companies that shows about the awareness of people in BCP after such a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. In fiscal year 2007 only 18.
9% companies have implemented BCP, but that went up to 45.8% after the earthquake in 2011. Japanese people started to know the need of business continuity in their companies as it was the need a. In the above chart clearly, we can see the positivity of the people towards the business continuity.
In 2007 about 22.7% were unknown about the BCP, but in 2011 it has decreased up to 0.4%. That clearly shows the need of Business Continuity in their companies. 11.Identification of Issues There has been some problem based on the business when there is no Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan.
Most of the business organization don’t think that there is a need of Business Continuity Plan in the organization. Mostly of them think that the Insurance covers the loses. But Insurance does cover some loses but it won’t cover the loses like the death of some employees, liability loss and the loss in the reputation. There are many problems faced on the companies due to lack of these plans.11.1.
Problem due to lack of Business Continuity Planning i)Business Failure The company will be at the high risk. Anything can happen at any time. They are not aware of the emergencies.
The main problem that company face is that their business will be the failure. Some reports shows that about 75 percent business fail within three year when companies lack BCP. But the companies having BCP recovers more faster and effectively. ii) Injury and DeathThe most serious problem is the loss of human being. Other losses can be covered by the insurance, but the death can’t be covered.
In the case of Natural disasters anything can happen. Company should be in a goal to keep the employees and customers safe during any type of emergencies. To prevent injury or death new business continuity technology can be offered, which one seems to be the good idea .
iii) Loss of ReputationTo make good reputation in the market takes the long period of time. But it can be gone within the second. People will know the accidents happen where they are investing their good money to be secure and to prevent from the breaches. When companies keep on neglecting the risk, whether it is small or big , people looses the trust to the company .
Once the trust is gone , it is harder to gain again. iv)Financial Loss
