My own goal of pursuing a graduate degree in Computer Science in the domain of Machine learning stems from my undergraduate work and life experiences which have molded me into the person I am today. This field interests me because of its formal and rigorous mathematical outlook and its wide-ranging applications. The desire to advance in this field by doing cutting-edge research has motivated me to pursue graduate studies.
I am an undergraduate in Electronics & Communication Engineering from School of Engineering and Technology, Jain University. Beyond the classroom, I have taken the initiative of undertaking a number of research projects under the supervision of faculty members. A key project that I would like to emphasize is Underwater Broadband Communication. This project included design and implementation of an acoustic system for a signal of 30 KHz frequency (16 tones). The theoretical research has focused on the simulation of noise and loss models, modulation detection techniques, channel estimation algorithms and signal to noise ratio. The project was simulated using Matlab and Simulink, in order to debug the program, tune the chosen parameters, and analyze results. My long-term interest in machine learning has pursued me to work on this project, and augment the efficiency of current underwater models.
I have involved myself in projects on International levels. I was one of the 100 students selected from over tens of thousands of applications from 7 countries for STEAM school to work on a social innovation project in the area of healthcare and well-being (for people that lacked human sensation). I, along with my teammates brainstormed and worked on a project named CURA – a smart health monitoring wearable device which focuses on monitoring pain and notifying progress to the user and therapist through the power of IOT and Artificial Intelligence. I mainly worked on the Hardware (Arduino board, Sensors) and Software (AI, Database) with the help of global mentors Bodo Hoenen, Michel Pavageau and Siji Sunny. We received unexpected traction for our project when Sir Navi Radjou during his presentation on frugal innovation compared our working prototype to a Silicon Valley product that uses 8 sensors and costs $200 while we could achieve the same functionality with 2 sensors and $5. He also assured to put us in touch with GE Healthcare in the US and provide us with all the VC resources to make CURA a viable product and make physiotherapy as affordable as possible. Also, CURA made it to the UNESCO Tech conference India where it received a positive response in social innovative design. My work on CURA has fuelled my desire to pursue a graduate degree specializing in Machine Learning to better visualize and analyze data to make CURA a better model for physiotherapy.
I am a core member and developer of Data Science for India. Our small team of undergraduates is devising a curriculum under the tutelage of UC Berkeley faculties that would teach high school students fundamental concepts of data science to elementary machine learning algorithms, making data science accessible in Indian education system. As the need for data and computing grows, we wish to ensure that Indian citizens have the resources to appreciate the power of data science. In addition to this, my consistent performance during my machine learning specialization offered by University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) on Coursera also gave me an opportunity to be a mentor for the course where I can directly interact and guide over 100k students specializing in the area. During my mentoring, I framed data science problems and worked on relevant datasets under the supervision of Professor Christopher Brooks. With these activities, I had made a small foray into the larger world of Machine learning.
In terms of academic preparation, my undergraduate education at one of the top deemed universities in India has provided me with a right mix of practical and theoretical education. I have mainly enjoyed courses like the Digital signal processing, Statistics, Embedded systems and Linear Algebra. Besides broadening the range of my knowledge, it has given me valuable insight into practical aspects of the study. My fields of interest range over a wide spectrum of areas; however, Machine learning especially interests me. I am confident that my undergraduate learning and previous technical experience has provided me with sufficient knowledge of fundamentals in order to take up this as my specialization in my graduate study. Apart from academics, I have been closely associated with Indian Red Cross Society, an organization working with an old age home in my hometown Yadgir. That experience has developed in me a strong sense of social responsibility and a commitment to give back to the society that I have grown up in.
Finally, a constant opportunity for growth is vital for me and hence I envision myself studying in the centre of Europe’s technological and research hub. In India, the research practices are at an initial stage and thus the learning prospects are much lower. I believe that in Switzerland, the scope for creativity is vast and the ability to create is to the maximum. Thus, I want to realize and shape my goals by pursuing my graduate studies in a country that will help expand my horizon.
Thus, I believe that North Carolina State University, with its highly qualified faculty and world-class research facilities, will provide me with the right mix of academic opportunities and research experience. I am especially interested in the research being conducted by Dr.Ragunathan Rajkumar at your university. The exhaustive work being done in the domain of cyber-physical systems and autonomous cars at the Real-Time & Multimedia Systems Lab and the General Motors Collaborative Research Lab respectively perfectly align with my research interests. I expect to gain technical knowledge and practical expertise with which I will contribute to research projects currently underway at CMU and make progress towards my overall career goal of becoming a researcher, based either at a university or in the industry.
