In the Summer of 2013, a labour organizer Alicia Garza from Oakland published a post on her Facebook with regards to George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed 17 year old Trayvon Martin and whom was then acquitted of his murder. Since then, it has created a banner under which dozens of disparate organisations and individuals all over the world, closely or not so, press for change. There have been hundreds of unlawful killings of unarmed black men by police and a need more than ever to spread the message that Black Lives Matter. The death of Mark Duggan in 2011 sparked rioting in London from outraged black teenagers who felt as though their lives were not being valued, and this was even before the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag was coined. Dr Drury said: “If people are united for the first time then it’s a basis for a sense of empowerment. If people all feel the same way and they expect others to feel that way, they expect to be supported and that gives them the confidence to take action.” 1 Though not referring to black people in his comments, this is what he means and there is truth in that.

Black people in US and UK have gathered together in large groups and find empowerment in standing up against the oppressor in large groups.
