of year ago, people have been altering the genomes of plants and animals using
traditional breeding techniques. But, in these era of globalization, we can
incorporate new genes from one species into a completely unrelated species
through genetic engineering which optimizing agricultural performance the
production of valuable pharmaceutical substances. According to World Health
Organization, “Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms
(plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has
been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural
recombination” (May, 2014). Therefore, I support the idea of having the Genetic
Modified (GM) have bring a lot of advantage to the environment and human being.

The first
reason for having the Genetic Modified plant is it can help to protect the
environment. This is because, they are kinder to the nature. Nowadays, farmers
have been depending on the use of the pesticides and herbicides in order to
make their plant grow. As we all know, the use of an excessive amount of
pesticides and herbicides will create a certain hazard on the croplands. In
which will eventually make the soil unusable. Through the gene biology, the
scientist has come out with an idea to modified the gene of the plants. As a
conclusion, they will be resistant to the herbicides and pesticides. This is a
good way to improve the environment because it reduces the number of herbicides
and pesticides used in the cropland.

Secondly, by
having GM plant it may able to create a food that are more nutritious and
appealing to eat. GM crops able to make a food more nutritious by adding a gene
to produce a lot of vitamin and nutrient that body need for health. A golden
rice is a good example of food that have successfully be genetically modified. It
has contained a lot of vitamin A. Moreover, the color of the food can be
improved by GM plant. As a result, the food will be more pleasing to eat. Spoon
university have reported that the deeper color in food might changes how human
brain perceived what is being eaten. As a conclusion, the GM food will able to
create a food that more nutritious and pleasing to eat.

Some may argue
that the GM plant will reduce the nutritional value in the food. Some of the GM
food have been reported to be void due of nutritional value. This is because,
the gene of the plants tend to focus more on increasing their amount of
production instead of focus on the nutrition of the food itself. As a
conclusion, by having GM, the nutrition of the food has been compromised with
the quantity of the production of the food itself.

As a
conclusion, it can be concluded that the GM have an advantage on which increase
the nutrition value of the food source with an extra vitamin to the food such
as golden rice as mention above. However, there are also disadvantage such as
antibiotic resistance in some of the GM food sources.
