I. Main character The maincharacter of the story is William Kamkwamba. He is not tall in height and hewas black in color.
When the story started William was about 3 – 6 years old.He did not have big muscles but he was fit in the body. His best descriptionwas a middle size.
His face was round. When he smiled he looked like a personwho is always happy. William’s hair wasblack and looked hard. Fourimportant character traits the main character shows in the book are; he wasdetermined, innovative, forgiving and kind. William was determined to build thewindmill when he had no tools. He was determined to build the windmill evenwhen people called him garbage boy. William was innovative when he and Gilbertfixed old radios. He was innovative when he and Geoffrey were making the radiostation.
William was a forgiving person when the people called him a madman orgarbage boy. He even forgave when the students always shouted his name andcalled him mean things. William was kind to his family when he wanted to makecooking gas so that the women in his family would not get cough.II. The Conflict Theconflict in the story was the character against nature. William’s father was afarmer in Masitala. His whole family depended on money from the crops he grew.
William went to school using money from the farm. When the drought and faminecame to Malawi, the crops all died from lack of water in the soil. So Williamhad to drop out of school.The other conflict is the way William did not havetools and materials to build his windmill. Even though he did not have theproper materials and tools to build the windmill, he would go to the scrap yardto search for them.
It took him weeks and weeks to find the materials. Hisfriends helped him with money to buy the materials that he could not find inthe scrap yard. III. The Main Event The famineended when the rain came down and the farmers could plant their crops again.
William’s father decided to plant maize and a little tobacco this time. Hewould use the money from the crops to pay William school fees. William thenwent back to school but later had to drop out again because there was notenough money. William didnot have the proper tools or materials but he finished building the windmill.
Everyone in the village was impressed. He used the electricity from thewindmill to supply light to his house. He used a wire system to place lightbulbs in his room, the living room and his parent’s room. He made an electricbutton to put the light off and on. He also made an electric breaker box. Thewindmill made William to be famous in Malawi.
Many people came to see thewindmill and wrote about it in the newspaper and television. Due to the newsabout William windmill, he was able to go back to school and later traveloutside Malawi. IV.
The Conclusion The author’spurpose for writing this book was to tell his life story so that people whoread it would learn. He was telling the story so that someone reading it wouldbe able to change their life. He wants to give new ideas to those reading thebook. The effectthis book had on me was to think in a new direction. You do not have to get allthe tools to build the thing you want. The story made me to understandelectricity in a way that I never knew. The book entertained me for a longtime.
The book exposed me to a lot of new words and phrases. I wouldrecommend this book to a classmate because I think it would change thatperson’s life forever. That person will develop a new way of thinking about theworld. The person may also be able to help his/her community or country. Thebook will give those lots of ideas.
