Have you ever wondered out of the 45 presidents of the United States who the best one was? Ronald Wilson Reagan was considered to be the best president to have ever been elected. Before he became president he was actually a part of the Democratic Party. Once he began running for president he was a part of the Republican Party. He was a tall strong man, always well dressed in a suite and tie. An interesting fact about him was that he loved jelly beans, his favorite flavor was licorice. His loves for jelly beans sparked when he started eating them as an attempt to stop pipe smoking. Reagan got his supply of the sugary little beans from Goelitz Candy Company, the producer of the jelly beans. He would send a monthly shipment to the Governor’s Office throughout Reagan’s eight years in Sacramento. Another thing the company did was make a custom-designed jelly bean jar just for Reagan. His piercing blue eyes were intimidating but welcoming, it’s as if you could see the future of out nation in his eyes. He had a warm smile that brought a comforting aroma everywhere he went. He had nicely cut brown hair and his face was wrinkled from years of laughter, happiness, and worry.  Reagan was also the first American president to be divorced and remarried. It began when Nelle and Jack Reagan, his parents, brought Ronald Reagan into this world on February 6, 1911 in Tampico Illinois. As a child he grew up in a poor family. He was very adventurous and was a risk taker. From a very young age he was an expertised swimmer. He put his swimming skills to work and spent six summers working as a lifeguard on Lowell Park and in total he saved 77 people from drowning during his years of work! He graduated from Dixon High School in 1928. After he graduated, he immediately enrolled in the Eureka College located in Eureka, Illinois that same year. After he graduated he enlisted in the Army Reserve. On 19 April 1942 Lieutenant Reagan began active duty. Because of his bad eyesight, he was confined to limited service only, which prohibited him from serving anywhere overseas. His first assignment was as liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. This assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California. on 22 July 1943 was promoted to Captain.  By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the Army Air Forces. Aside from running for president Reagan had a passion for acting in movies and shows. He loved acting since he was a teenager. Reagan was a very hard working man. Once he set his mind to something he didn’t stop until he accomplished the task. He also was a man of integrity and starred in many different films. Reagan’s hard working personality paid off in 1937 when the Warner Brothers were seeking a new actor to replace a favorable young star who had sadly died in a car accident, and Reagan roughly resembled him. The studio gave him a $200-a-week contract. This was due to him being a very skilled actor who pleased directors because he was always on time and quickly memorized his lines. These are all things that movie directors look for and love. His best work was in small comedies and action movies. Reagan got a job as a radio sportscaster at WOC in Davenport. His animated imagination and vibrant radio voice made up for the fact that he had no experience in radio. Reagan possessed many qualities that foreshadows a successful movie career. By the end of Reagan’s career he had appeared in 52 movies. Ronald Reagan ran from 1981-1989. During the election process he ran against Walter Mondale. One of Reagan’s major issues that was held against him when he ran for re-election against Mondale was his age. In the final debate, when journalist Henry Trewhitt asked him if his age would be an problem, Reagan said, “I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” The election was over at that moment. One of Reagan’s many achievements was ending the Cold War. Between 1985 and 1988 Ronald Reagan and the Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev held four summit conference. They both signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, this meant that all nuclear and conventional missiles were going to be eliminated. This treaty was part of ending the Cold War and made the connections between the United States of America and the Soviet Union less intense. More than 2.000 weapons were destroyed. ” Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means” – Ronald Reagan.  the Bombing of Lebanon Barracks. On October 23, 1983 a suicide bomber crashed a truck carrying more than 2,000 pounds of explosives through heavily protected U.S. Marine barricades. It killed 241 U.S. troops He definitely used his power for the good of this nation. To this day people talk about how great of a president he was. The world needs more people like Ronald Reagan. He influenced the world greatly.  Many well-known phrases in the political world are associated with Ronald Reagan. Many have called him the “Great Communicator.” Others refer to his time in office as the “Reagan Revolution.” Still others reflect on “Morning in America,” one of the most memorable campaign themes in American history. After leaving the White House in January 1989, him and his wife returned to California before traveling the world. Though he was no longer president he still kept working. Reagan worked in different offices around where he lived. He also began public speaking again and would charge $30,000-50,000 per speech. During his free time he wrote his autobiography, An American Life. Doctors concluded, after he said he couldn’t remember what happened with the Iran-Contra controversy,  that President Reagan had become one of the millions of American burdened by Alzheimer’s Disease. He said he couldn’t remember anything about this event. Though many people thought he was lying as a cover up, he was honest, he couldn’t remember most things because the disease had majorly affected his memory. It got to the point where part of his memory was completely gone. It got to the point where he couldn’t even recall his children’s or his wife’s names. On June 5, 2004, he died at his Los Angeles home at age 93, making him the nation’s longest-lived presidentIt is clear that Ronald Reagan accomplished many things during his time in office and also outside of the white house. Many would agree that Reagan was the best president to have ever stepped foot in office. Ronald Reagan once said that, “Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” This shows that his first and most important priority was to help and protect the his people. He didn’t try to run their lives or push them to believe things they didn’t believe in like some presidents have done in the past.  After researching more about him I learned that he loved jelly beans, which I thought was kind of funny. I also didn’t know that he was the reason the Cold War ended. I think he was an amazing president and that the future presidents to come should look at him and what he did for inspiration.
