Gender, sex,and sexuality are not the same thing. Initially, sex refers to physical or physiological differencesbetween males and females determined at birth. Gender is a term defined byhow males and females behave as the gender one has regarding to the cultureexpectations. Sexuality includes aspects related to sexual preferences,desires, and practices of human. In American culture, there had been someperceptions about sex, gender, and sexuality that helped make changes in areassuch as to request for sex equality; to have a openly wide view abouttransgender and intersex. An example of sex inequality showcased by Welsch andVivanco, “In the United States today, only 18% of Congressional seats are heldby women; in the workplace women earn on average 81% of what their malecounterparts earn; and sex discrimination persists in social expectations.
” (p.298). However, the perception of masculinity and male domination was alteredgradually through time due to various debates and protests occurred aboutgender inequality and mistreatment between male and female. In addition, theidea of transgender and intersex were step by step to be widely accepted.
Starting in the 1990s, political activists in the United States createdpressures on the government as well as community to officially recognize therightfulness of transgender people. Or in the year of 1960 and 1970, the gayand lesbian rights movement was supported by openly gay and lesbian celebritiesthat called attention to this issue of human sexuality.
