Men’s Fashion of the 21st century has drastically changed since the Renaissance era. In today’s fashion you would never see men wearing what they wore in the Renaissance era. Some of the designs have carried over to our time, but not very many. The details they would have put on clothing during the Renaissance era, are different from the details they would have put on clothing today. Such as the doublet, the poor point evolved in the fifteenth century into the doublet The doublet was a very important article of clothing during this time. It was the most common male garment of the century (Annenberg 1).But in time the common shape of men’s clothing would eventually evolve into what it is today. Dragging and slashing was another one of the Renaissance era’s decorative techniques that was used to distinguish and beautify men’s garments (levanter).
But as seen in today’s fashion Calvin Kline is a major designer. He created a classic man’s silhouette which was made by using more interesting fabric’s and unique details (Billet 3). Kline has become one of the most common designers worn today. Nieves2 The shape of men’s clothing evolved from the inverted triangle to a more rectangular silhouette with an Italian shape.Still then several important trends came together in the late fifteenth century to make a real change in the costume styles in Europe (Annenberg 1).
After a while there became a rule to men’s clothing. It should not be wrinkled or have any frays, and should always fit properly (Christopher 2). So over time everything changes, even men’s fashion statements. Wealth and status could be distinguished by the types of clothing people wore. There are many trend setters today as well as in the Renaissance era.
One of the trend setters was Phillip III, Duke of Burgundy (Annenberg 2).One of the things that carried over to our time is the wealthiest are always dressed the nicest. In the late middle age the wealthiest members of a royal court had the resources to regularly change their costume and accessories. Consequently the emphasis on fashion and the wealth was required to pursue fashion.
Men’s coats and tops have drastically changed in today’s fashion. In today’s time one idem we have is casual jacket, they are perfect to wear with jeans and a simple tee. Next we have a men’s sport coat and blazer as a very common wardrobe trend.Guys are wearing sports coats with a casual pair of jeans; it seems to make a guy look more put together rather than just something they’ve thrown on (billet 2). A men’s blazer is great paired with cargo pants and sandals, it can be worn as a casual outfit any day (Christopher 2). In the Renaissance era men’s surcoat was most commonly worn. It was lined with ermine, the under sleeves are fastened with myriad small buttons and the trail was at least 10in long (Leventon 1).
In the 2000 century men’s polo’s became a trend in all men’s casual fashion (Christopher 1).Similarly there was a style of Nieves 3 fitted tunics that can be traced in England through manuscripts illumination and effigies made after 1390 (leventon 2). During this time period more clothes commonly worn today would be created. Items included in men’s fashion have expanded since the Renaissance era.
In the renaissance era no one would ever catch a man wearing sneakers let alone even know what they were. But in today’s time sneakers are an everyday means, if a man wore jeans commonly he should also be wearing a belt made of fabric (billett1).In today’s time people would pair up a regular pair of jeans with a plain shirt to tone it down to make a unique casual mans outfit (Christopher 3). A man should always match his belt to his shoes. Traditional colors would work best like black or a dark brown (billet 1). Men never wore ties in the Renaissance era but now most working men are obligated to wear one.
A man could never go wrong with a diagonal striped tie, plaid or even polka-dots. So as anyone can see men’s fashions is not quite what it was before.
