It is very well said that if a person is not persuaded to quit smoking due to its healthy hazards, then the cost of getting oneself medicated may induce a person to quit smoking. Often times, most people start smoking when they are in their teens and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Some have tried to quit but have returned to cigarettes because smoking is such a strong addiction. It is a habit that should be stopped because when you run, you get tired and dizzy, especially if you have been smoking for years and years, It can make your nails brittle and your fingers turn yellow, It makes your house smoky and smell like a cigarette ash- tray and it can make one susceptible to many diseases. When our parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke pretty much anywhere, even in hospitals.
My middle-aged friend at the hospital told me that she used to shoot x-ray with one hand and a cigarette in the other about twenty years ago, shocking isn’t it?Advertisements for cigarettes were all over the place. Today, we’re more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV and/ radio. Of all the habits humans indulge in, Smoking is the most baffling. Yet many people, once they start to smoke, continue to do so throughout their lifetime.
It is almost universally accepted that that lifetime will be foreshortened and that the smokers general well being will deteriorate at a greater rate than the non-smoker.Looked at objectively, the habit is addictive. Cigarette manufactures have been required to put warnings on all their packages of cigarettes to tell smokers that cigarette smoking is dangerous to health.
But still people smoke. Smoking is the cause of many diseases, some fatal and others somewhat debilitating, yet all seriously affect your health and therefore affect your quality of life as well as the life of those who are nearest and dearest to you. So why would a person want to put something into their mouth and suck on it till addictive toxins go inside the lungs and do damage?Individuals who indulge in this habit claim that cigarettes have a calming effect when they feel stressed. At least that’s what two of my friends used to tell me in high school. The reason for the calming effect is due to nicotine delivered from tobacco by smoking. The very rapid absorption of nicotine (nicotine takes just ten seconds to reach the brain once smoke entered the lungs) and the high blood pressure levels that result, promote rapid and strong behavioral reinforcement from smoking. One of the reasons smoking should be stopped is because one of the first places the harmful effects of cigarettes show up is in your smile. Tobacco contains substances that will stain your teeth.
So much for first impressions. Dentists now have new ways to bleach tooth enamel, but after a period of time, the stains become too deep to remove. Heavy smokers have permanently yellowed teeth, and those are the lucky ones who keep their teeth.
To make things worse, smokers sometimes have a problem with the bones that support the teeth so that they can’t even wear dentures. And these problems are just about the way your mouth looks, not to mention the breath. Second reason is that when you smoke, your family suffers. If you smoke in the house, you are putting your family at risk for the same health problems that smoking causes.
When they breathe in second-hand smoke, they also are at risk for lung cancer and emphysema. Mothers who smoke while pregnant adversely affect their unborn babies. The baby can be born with a very low birth-weight, which can result in health problems, mental problems and even at worst, death for the baby.
Thirdly, smoking causes premature ageing. Smoking destroys the ability of the skin to renew itself effectively, thus accelerating the ageing process. Compared to non smokers of the same age group, smokers look older than they should be. Also, It’s likely that the smokers’ skin will be far more wrinkled, pale and generally damaged. Although some would argue that the degree of aging due to smoking depends on genetic and environmental factors, long-term smokers often have wrinkles similar to nonsmokers who are twenty years older.Of all the common addictions, smoking is possibly the most damaging on a national and I dare say global scale. The glorification of such a habit ought to be condemned and stopped. But the big industrial houses have been encouraging this habit by coining catchy slogans.
They aim at catching their patrons young. They misguide the youth into believing that smoking is a macho thing, it increases stamina or it adds to ones personality and it is fully satisfying Smoke addiction has been working like an epidemic across the world and has been increasing for the last one decade.Efforts have been and are still being put in, to control it but all in vain. From celebrities to common mass, everybody has been “seeking refuge” in the act of smoking. It seems as if it gives your mind and body strength enough to fight with sleep, hunger and also psychological barriers. There are several people and organizations who have been the trying to spread awareness regarding the baselessness of these notions, but the number of smokers are rising steadily in spite of knowing that smoke causes lung cancer and various other heart and lung diseases. In conclusion I would equate the predicament of a smoker to that of a person caught in a trap made from barbed fish-hooks. Whereby every time the victim struggles to break free, the hooks get more deeply embedded.
There is only one way to escape. To remain still and calm while each hook is, as gently as possible, removed. When and only when each hook has been dealt with, can the person walk free. It is clear that the disadvantages of smoking far outweighs any perceived advantages and hence smoking should be avoided at all costs or stopped. While there is a cost associated with quitting, over time the damage smoking had done to the body, can reverse itself, if a person ceases tobacco use. This puts that cost into perspective, especially when compared to the thousands of dollars spent every year on smoking.
With all the reasons discussed in previous paragraphs, there are no real to continue smoking. Isn’t it time people saved their health’s and their money by putting in the effort to become non- smokers?
