Energy plays an important role in our society. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to complete simple daily tasks. Most people take energy for granted, however, energy can become scarce if the right precautions aren’t put into place. In order to conserve energy, renewable energy can be used.

Renewable energy is energy that is obtained using renewable resources. Renewable resources are resources that can be naturally replenished throughout time, such as water, hydrogen, sun, biomass, biofuels, and heat. These resources can be used to create many different forms of renewable energy.      Due to the recent decrease in the number of fossil fuels available, renewable energy sources have had a higher demand. Even though using renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels causes a big shift in the gears of societal norms, there are many advantages to its use. Forms of renewable energy include solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, hydrogen and fuel cell power, and geothermal energy.      Solar energy is energy that is harnessed from the sun through the use of nuclear fusion.

With the use of photovoltaic power, the energy from the sun is able to be converted into electricity or heat. This proves to be beneficial for grid-connected systems, industries, rural habitats, and indoor consumer use. Grid-connected systems allow the network to meet the energy demand and aid household supply by combining solar power to existing grid networks. Industries have the most prevalent use of solar power out of these four categories. It can be used for a plethora of industrial needs.

Rural habitats such as farms can use solar energy to power equipment needed to manage crops and farmland. Solar energy can also power the use of calculators for consumer use indoors. Solar energy is a beneficial form of renewable energy. Due to its environmentally safe attributes and resourcefulness, the sales of solar powered photovoltaic cells and modules have been increasing at a rate of 15%  throughout the past decade according to Siemens Solar.

Since solar energy is at a high demand, the price tends to be more expensive than traditional sources. However, the investment will eventually pay off. Depending upon the amount of sunlight available, investors will eventually start saving more money with solar power than traditional sources in about 6-9 years.

Although solar energy is more expensive than traditional sources, it is the cheapest renewable energy source. As the price of fossil fuels rises, the price of solar panels will decrease. Furthermore, the government has put effective policies in place to reduce the cost of solar, thus increasing its large-scale, commercial, and residential solar projects. The NY-Sun Solar Program, net metering, and tax incentives are prime examples. The NY-Sun Solar Program lowers the cost of installation.

Tax incentives allow the consumers a reduction in cost of solar energy through income tax credits, state tax exemptions, and property tax exemptions. Net metering allows the energy not used by consumers to be recycled back into the grid. Solar energy proves to be very beneficial for both the environment and economics.    Wind energy
