BACKGROUNDSolid waste management becomes a great problem in recenttime.
Rapidly growing population is liable for producing large amount of solidwastes. To develop an efficient SWM system the existing scenario of solid wasteof a city should be known which is enable to find out the exact problemshappening regarding disorder of solid waste within the city. Chittagong citywas known as the “cleanest city” of Bangladesh due to its neatness and anoverwhelming presence of green trees and hilly areas. But now recently due tothe presence of piles of refuses dotting and improper waste management, theclean lines of the city has been facing an acute decay. OBJECTIVESolid waste management has become a major concern for thecities and towns of Bangladesh. Chittagong is the second largest city inBangladesh.
As a metropolitan city different types of SW are produced daily by the people. Lowcollection coverage, scarce transport services, recycling and disposal and lackof suitable treatment, facilities are responsible for unsatisfactory wastemanagement, leading to air, water and land pollution. Which putting people andthe environment at risk.
In such a circumstance this study has intended tounfold the institutional dimensions of solid waste management including thetypes & amount of wastes produced in this city and to identify swm problems.A field survey had been conducted to identify the recent scenario of swm systemin Chittagong city area. It helped to identify the problems regarding solidwaste management system which helped in this study to give some solicitation toimprove the solid waste management system of Chittagong.SIGNIFICANCEThe current society is much more aware of the environment. Thereare an increasing number of environmental adjustment which is very oftenchallenging for the the management of SW .
This makes the recycling as means ofreducing waste to thelandfill to be very significant in the SWM sector. METHODOLOGYPrimary and secondary data have been used in thismethodology. Primary data have been collected from depth interview and personal.Data have been collected from different respondent groups like citycorporation employees, housewives, garbage collector.
Their opinion has beencollected to get an acumen into existing waste management system. Theirsuggestion has been considered in the study. Secondary data have been collectedthrough pursuing different reports of City Corporation, web materials, variousarticles, journals, news and books.It has been found that total 122 tons of SW of differenttypes are being generated daily.
Of the total quantity 45-55 percent iscollected but the rest is left. It is broadly estimated that between 10 to 15percent of the total municipal budget is used for SWM. The wastes which remainsuncollected and dumped in open area, street or drains, clogging the drainagesystem that creates grave environmental decay and health risks.
The collectedwaste is presently being disposed of mainly in a low-lying area. Little amountof waste is being reclaimed or salvaged for recycling according to its marketvalue. Finally, this paper suggests a safe and sustainable dumping site forenvironmental protection to keep the city nice and healthy. OUTCOMEThe CCC collects 1357-ton waste daily. Collection efficiencyis 70 percent of the generated waste Management scenario in ChittagongManagement method. Now I am going to present a short area solid wastemanagement description. Daily municipal solid waste recycling scenario by wastepickers at Anandobazar and Arefin Nogor dumping site in 2014.
Total dailyAnandobaza to Arefin Nogor collections…..Paper 1.575 ton, Plastic 0.550 ton, Aluminum 0.027 ton,Steel 0.
556 ton, Glass 2.050-ton Total 4.758 ton. Which means Solid wastemanagement system is working perfectly.
CONCLUTIONAt the end I just want to add that, Bangladesh is gettingpopulated day by day. More population, more waste, more pollution , moreenvironment disadvantage. So we have to cover the whole nation. Becauseenvironment is getting weak day by day. we need to manage take action againstit and walk towards to a clean Bangladesh and a healthy Bangladesh.
