According to W.E.B. Dubois, twoness is the struggle of being Black and American has to do with perceiving yourself through someone else view.

Yes, I feel that W.E.B. Dubois concept is applicable to Black folk in 2018 because we live in a world that not acceptable one’s blackness therefore you have to assimilate to white culture and it changes us emotionally, mentally, and physically. “One ever feels his twoness: an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder” (Dubois). In the “Souls of Black Folk” by W.E.

B DuBois he speaks on how twoness comes from being Black and American at the same time. He had claimed that Blacks were are not seen as part of the country. Twoness comes into play when blacks have prove who they are as Americans. But still try to stay with the African American culture which is challenging.

As an Black young woman I don’t feel apart of the American culture as another person might feel they are. I feel this way because I know that my color of my skin and the way I look has a lot to do with first impressions or how a white person might see me. Also, from my own experience when white people or others race look at me I feel their first thought that comes to their mind is that “oh she’s darker than me” or “she is black”,  instead of not even looking at the color of my skin. People don’t even give a person a chance to get to know someone but instead they will rather judge because of race. Even today, some Blacks are afraid to express themselves either because they come off too black or as an “oreo”. Some are afraid to listen to certain types of music, wear natural hair, and dress certain ways.  I believe that W.E.

B. Du Bois had referred to the experience African Americans had went through that whites can not recognize.    When being apart of America we have a sense that we are American but divided into another culture and race.

We are looked as the opposite and different in eyes of the whites. “Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddenness that I was different from the others; or like them perhaps in heart and ?life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil. I had thereafter no desire to tear down that veil, to creep through; I held all beyond it in common contempt, and lived above it in a region of blue sky and great wandering shadows”(Dubois).

It is hard to be Black person that is not hurt or affected by the way we are look upon in this world. In this world, today being Black can be good and bad thing because it can help but also hurt you.    Being an African American during 2018, is a struggle because you have to seek for happiness, security, and protection. Other races don’t accept Blacks or think they are different but it’s just a skin color. Expression is a huge problem in the Black community but seems to be getting better now. “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line”(Dubois). The white may feel superior to the other races but have problems of their own. Some Blacks don’t get jobs or other opportunities because of their skin color or the way they present themselves.

In the “Souls of the Black Folk”, W.E.B. gave us an understanding on what is was like to be Black in the early Twentieth Century.

The reason he wrote these essays because he believed that racism would be one of the main problems during the Twentieth Century. Many African Americans are still struggling today with twoness. It has been a challenging for Blacks during this century.

A lot of problems has been caused due to how white see blacks or how blacks try to hide their culture.
