Abstract One of the most important skills that aresearcher can have and should constantly work on improving is their ability toconduct a literature review analysis of existing literature. A literaturereview analysis helps to provide a theoretical base for a study by helping todescribe, evaluate, summarize as well as provide clarity the related studiesthus helping the author determine the exact nature of the current study.
Inthis paper, key elements that are related to the peer-reviewed article will bediscussed as it relates to the literature review analysis process. The Author’s Strategy or Criteria forSelecting Works The authors seemedto understand the importance of conducting an analysis of relevant literature whendoing the literature review. The authors of the article sited multiple sourcesin their literature review that gives some credibility to their argumentsrelated to their views on an effective organizational career development program.
According to Creswell (2012), authors need to make sure that their literaturereview contains a comprehensive as well as a critical synthesis of any usedliterature that is related to the theory that is based on thetheoretical/conceptual framework, also including the body of knowledge thatpertains to the research topic. Thearticles that the researcher selected helped to demonstrate how their theoryand claims on organizational career development practices can be substantiatedby existing evidence from those articles. This is similar to what is called thepreponderance of the evidence because the authors provided an exhaustive reviewof resent and prior literature. By this, the authors have ensured that theyhave provided a critical in-depth analysis of the scholarly works. According toChristensen, Johnson, & Turner (2014), authors should have extensiveknowledge and understanding of previous and recent research so that it will beeasier for them to provide a detailed updated literature review on the topic ofstudy. The strategy for selecting works used in the literature review highlightshow organizations are now viewing careers and how the concept of job securityhas become an outdated term.
The Author’s Presentation of the Works TheAuthors presentation of the cited works is for the most part related to humanresource management and development sources. The authors also used amultipronged approach to collect data from unstructured interviews that wereconducted on HR and training managers of the organizations. A case study wasdone on a company by the name of Oman Natural Gas (ONG). A key methodology usedwas a survey where open-ended questions were asked of the HR and training managersof ONG, but there were also at least 75 questionnaires that were distributed toemployees.
The Author’s Level of Analysis Theauthors describe ONG’s existing career development plan as one that has notinvolved nor enthused its employees. Khan, Rajasekar & Al-Asfour, (2015),stated that “Comparison of both employees, as well as the organization’s views, revealed that there is a gap in the way career development plans are beingperceived and implemented so far.” The employees seemed to be most unhappy withthe current career development plans of ONG.
The majority of the study revealsthat the research gaps are an important part of the literature review section. Therefore, the authors should make sure that the research gaps are listed in orderto provide a basis for future research on this topic. Conclusion Basedon the above-mentioned facts, it is apparent that the literature review supportsthe study by providing an account of what has already been published about thetopic of study by accredited researchers or scholars.
