A keyhole lets only the slightest amount of light through. Looking at a keyhole from far away, it is absolutely impossible to see what is on the other side. However, if someone gets close enough to position their eye in the precise location over the hole, they can see an entire world on the other side. This is the unexpected lesson I learned from pursuing my Bachelors of Science in Biology and Psychology.

I learned that by looking at life closer, especially on the microscopic level, I acquired a key to whole new world. This new world is a beautiful universe where the most mysterious aspects of life seem to be explained with magnificent simplicity. All I had to do was get my eyes close enough to see.I have imagined a career helping people since as long as I can remember. Initially, I came into college with the hopes of making it into the medical field and potentially being a doctor. My passion for both helping others and science further increased when I first took a genetics class at the college level. At the same time, my immediate interest in general genetics compelled me to take more specific genetic courses to help me further understand genes’ roles in both physical and mental health.

My interest in learning about and understanding these processes strengthens my hope of becoming a successful Genetic Counselor in the future. I strongly believe that a profession in genetic counseling will make my life more meaningful as I will get the opportunity to improve the lives of others by assessing and educating them about their current and future health.I view the future of genetic counseling as a field filled with opportunities for me to positively impact the lives of others. As technology continues to advance, the potential for the field as a whole heightens. With genome scans becoming as cheap as x-rays, genome sequencing will be performed more frequently and the need for professionals in the field will increase.

I view the field of genetics as a form of precautionary medicine that can help save lives. . The world needs skilled, dedicated professionals to meet the future population’s health needs.
