Learning disabilities, being concerned with difficultyin learning things or subjects, the classification was done in accordance tothe degree of difficulties in learning. Adima (1989)lists them as follows:(i) Mildlearning disabilitiesEven though this is not considered asserious, it is nevertheless serious enough to attract the attention of theparents and teachers. Learners with mild learning disability can successfullybe incorporated in the general education classroom where delivery of educationservices coexist between the general and special educationist. The conditioncould get worse if neglected .(ii) Moderatelearning disabilitiesThis condition is serious and it requiresintensive assistance to enable the child to succeed. Learners with moderatelearning disability require remedial instruction in a resource room, where thelearners have a prospect to receive specific instruction while remainingintegrated with their friends in the school. In addition to the programs beingflexible to suit the level of the learner, resource rooms have a range ofmaterials.
(iii) Severe learning disabilitiesThe child at this degree would find itnear impossible to learn without any special method, materials, andindividualized educational program (IEP). Being a condition of high severity, learners necessitate intensive and comprehensive intervention, which ideallycan be offered in a separate class within the school or at a special school. When in a separate class, such learners appear to have an enhanced self-conceptthan in regular classrooms possibly because the competition in a regular class establishesthe criteria for achievement higher than the level that these learners canmeet. With its lower teacher-pupil ratio, this setting offers more intensiveindividualized instruction in which learners spend more time learning and henceare able to make greater strides in both academic and social areas (Smith,1991).
The teachers often find one or more of the saidclassification in their classrooms. When comprehended with the clearclassification of these learning disabilities, the teachers will effectivelyidentify learners with learning disabilities and the degree of its existence.
